Psychosomatic

Tyler Reese

What is it?
A psychosomatically influenced individual suffers from physical body symptoms caused by mental/emotional problems that have greatly affected his or her life. The most common symptoms of Psychosomatic disorders are asthma, allergies, migraines, and even sometimes, fake pregnancies. A lot of individuals today have suffered or are suffering from psychosomatic caused by the occasional work stress, or stress in general. This proves why it is important to learn to overcome stress rather than continue to be affected by it. Psychosomatic disorders usually occur worse in war veterans, because of the war their minds are scarred with horrifying images and flashbacks that they may end up fearing forever. In the hospital of Craiglockheart, 1917, Dr. Rivers tends to many psychosomatically damaged world war one soldiers. It is his duty to fix these soldiers by helping them overcome their bad emotions. "His patients might be encouraged to acknowledge their fears, their horror of war - but they were still expected to do their duty and return to France." (Regeneration, page 48). If River's patients never face their fears (psychosomatic disorders) how will they ever be able to return and fight for their country? So many physical symptoms have been occuring inside craiglockheart because of the war fears.
